Two main reasons I see discolored toenails are fungal infeaction or trauma.
Fungus brews in darl, moist, and sweaty places. If you wear closed toe shoesor walk in public saunas or pools, you are susceptible to fungal nails.
Trauma to the toe can also cause nails to discolor. A hematoma can form under the nail and cause the nail to detach from the nail bed. From there the nail can detach or renaim discolored for a considerable anount of time. Traumatic nails can be more susceptible to fungus.

Foot Hugiene is important to prevent recurrence of fungal nails. Consider investingin UV-C shoe sanitizers and copper or silver embedded fiber socks. This can reduce your chancesof fungal nail infections coming back.
We can also take a biopsy of the nail to see if there are any other causes of nail discoloration (ex. bacteria).
At Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Institute, we will provide you antifungal kit to help prevent recurrence.
